Hearing Loss
Many older people develop age related hearing difficulties. It is important to consider the type of hearing loss the individual has and their preferred way of communication. Consider the following:
- Speaking clearly, loudly and slowly.
- Picture aids.
- Hearing aids.
- Facing the person / not covering your mouth.
- Reducing noise / distractions in the environment.
It is also important to consider how hearing loss impacts your resident. They may be more disorientated to the environment around them or feel more socially isolated than others.
Think about how changes to a residents hearing could impact how you care for them. For example, how would you ask for their consent and communicate the need to conduct personal care for them? Otherwise, this could lead to them becoming agitated and resisting support due to misinterpreting your intentions.
